Olfactory Evidence
Menninger’s book notes and McLaren’s book hammers home the statements of the “nose-witnesses,” who smelled gunsmoke on the street or “at street level.” Given the direction and strength of the wind, it would have been impossible for that smell to originate from the Texas School Book Depository. In fact, the smell clung to the motorcade all the way to Parkland hospital. The only way that would have been possible is if the source of the gunsmoke originated from the motorcade—specifically, the follow-up car. The olfactory evidence—that is, what witnesses smelled—is probably the most telling of the witness statements.
